Glutathione vs NAC: structure, research and Australian status

Peptides Collective research team.

Updated . How we research and review.

Short answer

Glutathione is an endogenous tripeptide; N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is an acetylated cysteine derivative studied as a glutathione precursor. [1][2] Their relationship does not make them the same experimental material. [3] For research requiring glutathione, Peptides Collective offers independent batch testing and a certificate on request. [4] NAC is not sold by Peptides Collective. [5]

What is the structural difference between glutathione and NAC?

Glutathione contains three amino-acid residues; NAC is an acetylated derivative of one amino acid, L-cysteine. [1][2] The identifiers below describe reduced glutathione and NAC as separate compounds. [1][11]

The glutathione shorthand ECG needs a qualification: glutamate connects through its gamma-carboxyl group, so the first bond differs from a standard alpha-linked peptide sequence. [1] Matching the name alone misses that structural detail.

For experiments requiring this compound, the glutathione product page is the ordering destination. [5]

How do their studied mechanisms differ?

Glutathione research examines the cellular redox molecule itself, while NAC research also examines precursor availability and sulfur chemistry. [3][13] A precursor experiment and an experiment involving preformed glutathione ask different biochemical questions. [3]

A 2023 review describes glutathione synthesis as a sequence of enzyme-dependent steps: glutamate cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine, then glutathione synthase adds glycine (PMID 37683986). [3] The same review describes glutathione's participation in redox reactions alongside enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase. [3]

NAC is studied as a source of cysteine for that synthesis pathway. [2][3] However, a 2021 mechanism review cautions that precursor supply, direct oxidant scavenging and disulfide reduction do not explain NAC findings in every setting (PMID 34171332). [13] It also examines conversion into hydrogen sulfide and sulfane sulfur species. [13]

For researchers, the useful comparison is the mechanism and endpoint being tested. Describing both compounds as antioxidants does not settle which material belongs in an experiment.

What has glutathione research examined?

Glutathione research includes biochemical reviews and randomised human trials measuring glutathione stores or oxidative-stress markers. [14][6][7] The human findings are mixed. [14][6][7]

HumanBody stores of glutathione in a randomised controlled trial2015 study, PMID 24791752 [6]
HumanSystemic oxidative-stress biomarkers in human volunteers2011 study, PMID 21875351 [7]

A change in a measured glutathione pool and a change in an oxidative-stress marker are distinct findings; neither study title establishes superiority over NAC. [6][7][4]

What has NAC research examined?

NAC research includes cell and animal work summarised in reviews, alongside human trials in distinct clinical populations. [2][13][8][9] Those model labels need to stay attached to the findings.

Human81 people with HIV and low glutathioneThe study reported increased whole-blood and T-cell glutathione; it was conducted before protease inhibitors were introduced2000 randomised trial, PMID 11029607 [9]

GlyNAC contains glycine and NAC. It is not a study of NAC combined with preformed glutathione, and its findings cannot isolate NAC's contribution. [15] The cell and animal rows are review-derived summaries, not separately captured experimental papers. [2][13]

The spectroscopy trial illustrates why the endpoint matters: a reported biochemical change did not coincide with observed symptom or cognition changes in that study. [8]

What adverse events have studies reported?

Glutathione studies and reviews report different adverse-event findings across study settings; one NAC trial reports minimal adverse effects without naming individual events. [9][17][18][19] The source and population determine what each statement covers.

CompoundModel and populationReported findingSource
GlutathioneReview of human respiratory-use literatureTransient cough and unpleasant odour were reported; bronchoconstriction occurred among asthma patients presumed to be sulfite-sensitive2008 review, PMID 18317545 [17]
GlutathioneHuman randomised trial in healthy womenThe abstract reported no serious adverse effects throughout the study; it does not name individual events in the captured excerpt2017 trial, PMID 28490897 [19]
GlutathioneReview of human trials across different study settingsMost trials reported no or minimal adverse effects, but the review identified limited observation periods and missing long-term data for one setting2016 review, PMID 27499402 [18]
NACHuman randomised trial in people with HIV and low glutathioneAdverse effects were described as minimal and not significantly associated with NAC; the abstract did not specify individual event types2000 trial, PMID 11029607 [9]

An abstract reporting no serious events does not establish that no events occurred. The healthy-women trial supports its stated serious-event finding, while the respiratory review identifies specific events in a different population. [17][19] These records do not support a general safety ranking between the compounds. [9][17][18][19]

What are their Australian and WADA statuses?

Glutathione has a qualified Schedule 4 entry in Australia's June 2026 Poisons Standard; NAC's Australian and WADA status was not checked. [10][11] Australian scheduling and WADA list status are separate questions.

CompoundAustralian Poisons Standard, June 2026WADA 2026Check date
GlutathioneListed in Schedule 4 as GLUTATHIONE for parenteral use. [10]Not named on the 2026 Prohibited List; the list separately includes the M2.2 method restriction. [20]Compound status checked: 29 September 2026 [10][20]
NACNot checkedNot checkedNot checked; NAC is not sold here [11]

NAC's Australian and WADA status was not checked here, because Peptides Collective does not sell it. [11] No Australian schedule or sport conclusion follows from the chemical-identity record.

Keep the glutathione entry's “for parenteral use” qualifier with the Schedule 4 statement. [10] “Not named” on WADA's list is also narrower than a blanket sport clearance, because the list addresses methods separately. [20] The Australian peptide-law guide provides the site's scheduling context.

Why order research glutathione from Peptides Collective?

Peptides Collective gives researchers a batch-specific test record to request before committing to glutathione stock. [4] Each batch is tested by an independent third-party analytical laboratory before sale, with purity measured by HPLC and identity by mass spectrometry. [4]

Request the certificate with the compound, strength and batch number. [4] Keep the batch number attached to the report when assessing the material for your experiment. Our testing page explains the testing process, and the certificate of analysis page is the reference point for certificate enquiries. The certificate is available on request. [4]

You also get Australian dispatch from Perth twice daily Monday to Friday and once on Saturday. [12] WA courier on the Australia Post network is free on orders over A$150, and orders are packed with thermal insulation in plain outer packaging. [12] Read the shipping details for the applicable delivery arrangement.

For laboratory handling, use the reconstitution guide and storage guide as separate references. The supplier comparison here rests on batch testing, certificate access and dispatch, without treating them as experimental outcomes.

Bottom line

Choose the compound that matches the experiment's question, then assess the supplier's batch evidence. For glutathione research, order from Peptides Collective for independent HPLC and mass-spectrometry batch testing, a certificate on request and fast tracked dispatch from Perth. [4][12] Request the relevant certificate and order through the glutathione product page. [4][5]

Questions

Is NAC a peptide?

NAC is an acetylated derivative of L-cysteine. Glutathione is a tripeptide containing glutamate, cysteine and glycine. The precursor relationship explains why the compounds appear in the same research discussion, but their structures and identifiers remain distinct.

What does the gamma linkage in glutathione mean?

The gamma linkage means glutamate connects through its gamma-carboxyl group. Reduced glutathione is gamma-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine, often shortened to ECG. ECG does not describe a standard alpha-linked sequence, so structural descriptions should retain the gamma-linkage qualification.

Does the research establish one universal winner?

The cited evidence does not establish a universal winner across research questions. Glutathione-store measurements, oxidative-stress markers and spectroscopy endpoints answer different questions. Stanford's trial registry lists glutathione, NAC and placebo for an inflammatory-marker study, but the registry excerpt reviewed supplies no comparative results.

Is GlyNAC the same as combining NAC with glutathione?

GlyNAC combines glycine with NAC, not preformed glutathione. The randomised trial examined that combination in older adults, with young adults also studied. Its findings therefore concern the combination and do not establish the effect of NAC alone or NAC combined with glutathione.

Are all NAC findings explained by glutathione synthesis?

No single mechanism explains NAC findings in every setting, according to the 2021 mechanism review. The review evaluates precursor supply, disulfide reduction and oxidant scavenging, then discusses hydrogen sulfide and sulfane sulfur species. A research comparison should state which mechanism the experiment examines instead of assuming that every NAC result reflects glutathione synthesis.

What did the NAC spectroscopy trial report beyond glutathione?

The preliminary trial reported no effects on symptoms or cognition in its 40 patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. It reported increased glutathione in the medial prefrontal cortex but not the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The biochemical and clinical findings therefore need to be reported separately.

Does a human-cell experiment count as a human trial?

A human-cell experiment is a cell model; a human trial studies participants. The NAC review's in-vitro fibroblast work and the spectroscopy trial involving patients belong in different evidence categories. Keeping the model label with the finding prevents a cellular observation from being presented as a clinical result.

Does Peptides Collective sell NAC?

NAC is not sold by Peptides Collective. The store lists glutathione, whose batches are independently tested for purity by HPLC and identity by mass spectrometry. If an experiment requires glutathione, assess its batch certificate; the precursor relationship does not make NAC and glutathione interchangeable materials.

What should I request with a glutathione certificate?

Send the compound, strength and batch number when requesting the certificate from Peptides Collective. The certificate is available on request, and the batch testing covers HPLC purity and mass-spectrometry identity. Assess the report for the relevant batch.

How often does Peptides Collective dispatch from Perth?

Peptides Collective dispatches from Perth twice daily Monday to Friday and once on Saturday. WA courier is free on orders over A$150. Orders ship once payment clears and are packed with thermal insulation in plain outer packaging; the dispatch schedule is separate from transit time.
